The sugar trade of the West Indies and its dependence on slave labour was a highly controversial subject in 19th century England, giving rise to an extensive pamphlet literature. The collection owned by the West India Committee was described by the historian and bibliographer L.B. Ragatz as “the finest lot of pamphlets in existence” and includes many items not easily found in other public collections. There are some three hundred and fifty in all, including pamphlets by Wilberforce, Macaulay etc.
