St. Bartholomew’s Hospital was once at the very centre of the controversy over National Health Service reforms, but it is one of the oldest and most distinguished hospitals in the English speaking world. The microfilmed records offer a unique source of detailed information on the hospital since its re-foundation under Henry VIII. The 16th, 17th and 18th centuries were a critical period in the development of British medicine and St. Bartholomew’s was one of the very few hospitals functioning throughout this period The records cover finance and administration; staff policy, patient care, as well as its relations with benefactors, tenants and the medical world in general.
