The records contained in this archive are mostly the business records of Antony Gibbs & Sons and its associated companies, together with the family papers of the Gibbs Family of Devonshire and Aldenham, Hertfordshire. The complete archive of this famous London merchant and banking house includes substantial source material related to Latin America and Australia. Chile, Peru, Mexico, Argentina etc., were major centres of activity for the company throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, and this is reflected in the preservation of extremely detailed correspondence, accounts, general records etc. There was also an office in Spain (Cadiz) between 1808 and 1827, and there has been an office in New York since 1913.
