Catalogue Of The Drawings Collection Of The R.I.B.A.

The Drawings Collection of the R.I.B.A. dates from the foundation of the Institute in 1834. It is essentially national in character, representing the full range of British architectural draughtsmanship and reflecting the best work of all periods, including the present. Despite the fact that the collection consists largely of English designs dating from the late Gothic period onwards, it also contains an impressive number of drawings from abroad. These include almost the whole surviving output of the studio of Andrea Palladio, together with works by Canaletto, Viollet-le-Duc, Saarinen, Frank Lloyd Wright and Mies van der Rohe amongst others.

Among the outstanding British drawings are those by Robert and John Smythson, Inigo Jones, Wren, Robert Adam and Sir William Chambers. The 19th and 20th century are massively represented with very few significant architects missing.

The Drawings Collection of the British Architectural Library, a primary reference source of architectural history, is fundamentally a working collection, in constant use by practising architects, students and researchers alike. The availability of this catalogue in microform will make a significant contribution to research and as such will be a valuable addition to any library.
